7th graders taken to hospital after getting drunk before school

The Associated Press

SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. — Two seventh-grade students had to be taken by ambulance to a hospital after apparently getting drunk before they got on the bus, according to school officials.
Westwood Middle School Principal Paula Hoff told the Star Tribune that officials don’t yet know where the students got the alcohol, but that it appears it was consumed before they got on the bus. The incident happened on Thursday morning.

One of the students got ill on the bus and needed assistance getting off, according to a letter the school sent to parents. The student stayed in the hospital that night and was released the next morning.

The other student was determined later Thursday to need medical attention as well, and was also taken to the hospital. Hoff said she didn’t believe that student stayed overnight.

The case follows a string of recent binge-drinking deaths among college-age Minnesotans.

Hoff said the school hasn’t yet discussed disciplinary actions. “Right now, we’re more concerned with health issues,” she said.

" These types of behavior continue to get worse. The DARE programs etc. only do so much, but young people continue to become more defiant towards those who try to help them. It's pathetic and it's not going to stop. "
