Richard Lawrence Nelson, 62, was hit in the chest, leg, arm and hand by about 10 pellets of birdshot fired from a 12-gauge shotgun at about 1:30 p.m. He was taken to Community Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released by 4:26 p.m.
According to the Winona County Sheriff’s Department, Nelson was pheasant hunting with a party of three on a farm divided by the county line Sunday. Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said a pheasant flew up from the feet of 54-year-old Judy Louise Michaelson of Rushford. Ganrude said Michaelson swung her shotgun and fired at the bird, not seeing Nelson in the background.
Nelson said he was about 20 to 30 yards away from Michaelson at the time and is doing just fine after the accident. He declined further comment.
Michaelson will not be charged in the accident, Ganrude said.
