Going snow-where: ‘The car that will never get towed’

.
Take a drive past the intersection of West King and Wilson streets. What you’re looking for isn’t exactly significant, but you can’t miss it. It’s a white, early 1990s model Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera half-buried in snow with a red bow tied to the driver’s side rearview mirror.

And it’s been sitting there since Dec. 1.
An Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra parked at the corner of King and Wilson Streets in Winona Wednesday is disappearing into the snow. The car has been parked on the street since since Dec. 1, and neighbors now call it "the car that won’t get towed away." (Photo by Melissa Carlo/Winona Daily News

Neighbors have come to call it “the car that will never get towed.”

It doesn’t appear to be a nuisance. One woman who lives on the block said it’s like a game to her. Every morning she checks to see if it was towed overnight. So far the car has won every day.

She said she saw three people start to dig it out and get the car started, but the battery was dead. They apparently left to go buy a new one, but never returned. She said they might have just resigned to letting someone else dispose of the old junker.

So far, no one has stepped up to do it. The police won’t tow it away until someone complains about it violating the 20-hour parking ordinance, said Winona Police Chief Frank Pomeroy. As soon as that happens, it’ll be gone, he said.

So what about alternate-side parking tickets? The neighbor said she saw only one ticket on the car over the last month. Pomeroy said she likely just didn’t see others left there, but it was possible because there may only be four officers patrolling overnight and they can be easily side-tracked from issuing alternate-side parking tickets by other calls for service.

When it snows, it’s up to the city’s street department to determine whether or not to tag and tow cars left on the wrong side of the street, Pomeroy said.

Although messages left for the street department weren’t immediately returned Wednesday afternoon, it’s apparent the car has just somehow slipped under the radar. Take one look at it, and it’s clear the plows will just drive around it now, further burying the Olds in snow.

So until someone officially complains to the police department, the poor white Ciera will likely just sit there, accumulating mounds of snow.

And one neighbor will keep playing her game.

" That's not even the worst part CT. I heard they were from Chicago and wanted to see the Wilkie torn down! "

" I bet a million dollars that this car was owned by some college kids who ruined and predictably left it on the street for the city to tow because they are selfish irresponsible binge drinking public urinators. "

" Boy, some of you people are the biggest whiners. You should actually read what you write. The cops never do anything but take coffee breaks, blah, blah, blah. But yet in the paper you read about a search warrant with over 200 grams of coke found along with marijuana. At a 100 bucks a gram, that is a very large amount of dope. Just think...the cops did all that from a coffee shop...you people are such a bunch of whiners. "

" It doesn't do any good to complain. I called one time when a vehicle had been in front of my house for several days and this included being on the wrong side of the street on certain nights. The dispatcher actually laughed, at the complaint, and said they only checked certain streets on certain nights and she wouldn't send a car to ticket this vehicle. After this many days this area should have been included in one of the checks. Coffee breaks at the local coffee shop are more important. "

" again although I agree with all of you... you gotta admit, a neighborhoob full of non complainers is hard to come by in this town. And I commend this block and hope other citizens will see that is ok to mind ones own buisness. No harm, no foul. Plus that might hurt the departments pocket, poor with nothing to do, they might go and prevent real crime or something. "

" Well they say right in the article that someone should call in and complain so whats the hold up? "So until someone officially complains to the police department, the poor white Ciera will likely just sit there, accumulating mounds of snow."
Typical lazy winona residents not doing anything an easy to solve situation.

" Well, it is pretty sad to see laws that are in this town enforced on most but not all people or should I say cars. I am annoyed at the fact that once when I was parked "On the wrong side," I was ticketed and it was only about 45 minutes to an hour that my car was there. Now, you have a car which has been there almost a month and what, one ticket? Come On! Get with the program. I wonder if the car will be there next spring? "

" "...and they can be easily side-tracked from issuing alternate-side parking tickets by other calls for service." This quote from Chief Pomeroy sure does make it sound like writing these tickets is more important than any other aspect of an officer's job. Is public safety taking a back seat to the municipal cash flow? How many other crimes go unnoticed while the ticket-writing is going on? No, I've never been issued an alternate-side violation ticket - but I sure do see a lot written in my neighborhood. It shouldn't be the priority. "

" If the Street Department wants a car towed and the owner wants to get rid of the car (junk it for free), will this idea work? "

" It's just Black Ed doesn't what to work at digging out the bumper to tow it. "
