Crashing led to Pfeilsticker DWI: Teacher’s blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent

.
Linda Pfeilsticker, a candidate for the state House of Representatives, had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when she was charged with misdemeanor drunken driving earlier this month, police said.

A Wabasha County sheriff’s deputy reported finding Pfeilsticker’s car early Dec. 9 stuck in the ditch on Highway 60 within Wabasha city limits near her home.
The deputy said the 36-year-old Pfeilsticker appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and failed field sobriety tests. Her blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.17 percent about 1:30 a.m. Dec. 9, said Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney Bartsch.

The misdemeanor ticket was Pfeilsticker’s first drunken driving charge.

Pfeilsticker, a Winona Senior High School social studies teacher, wrote a formal apology in a letter to the editor that appeared in Friday’s Daily News and took full responsibility for her actions. She said the incident will not affect her intent to run for Minnesota State House seat 28B in 2008.

“Everybody makes a mistake at some point in time,” Pfeilsticker said in a previous interview. “It comes down to how you’re going to handle that mistake — which is why I’ve been forthcoming.”

I am completely dismayed by the public's knee-jerk response of jumping all over people. Winonans...please, give people a chance and quit the witch hunts. In all aspects of this community. Second, the two charged in Winona County are shameful too, and I'm disappointed in their decision making as well. To my knowledge, they aren't looking to become part of the gov't which makes the matter 'non-public' so not the same as case in point. Thirdly, good to know about Gaithersburg...when he is up for re-election, please submit a letter to the editor in his area so voters can discuss the issue before re-electing him. Glad someone is watching! Lastly, the sport figures: They not only have to pay a fine, upon conviction, but also have their employers/league officers/union enforce their policies by fining and/or suspending the offender. I know this is high math, but the body processes alcohol slowly, so you could drink two drinks an hour for three hours, or one really stiff drink an hour over a span of time, and then figure in food or the lack of it... duh. The lawmaker admitted to having two drinks and was reportedly found to have a blood alcohol content of .10, which is above the legal limit in Maryland of .08. He was charged with DUI, driving while impaired, failure to obey a traffic device, and failure to drive right of the center line. Barve sponsored the DUI bill that changed the legal drinking limit from .10 to .08. "

I seem to recall another teacher getting a DUI and it was under the Police Blotter. No one said a word about that, but just because the media chose to sensationalize this because of her political affiliation, we are having this conversation.
Your hypothetical situation about losing a loved one is a mute point and has nothing to do with the current issue at hand. I just said she was human and made a mistake. What if every mistake you made is publicized and people were critical of you because of your job? This doesn't mean she is not fit to teach or run the country (c'mon if Clinton and Bush can do it...) it means she is human!

However with a different hypothetical outcome, J.D. refuses to answer my question. A perfect example of situation ethics. As long as no one got hurt it is no big deal, right? However, change the outcome and J.D. has no retort. This will be interesting to watch how her school district and her political party react to this teacher/candidate. Will we see situation ethics show it's ugly face again? Stay tuned . . . . "

It's a bad decision. No excuses. I've been wasted and stupid in my life, but if you know something is wrong to your core, you won't do it with a .30 blood-alcohol level. I never committed arson, stole, or drove drunk. You see, we can't make excuses like "it was a mistake...we all make mistakes..." in front of the kids. It was a terribly poor and potentially dangerous decision...completely irresponsible. That being said, I have supported this woman's political aspirations. They never really get the drinker/abuser the help they need. They are too busy covering up the problems. Oh by the way, Rep. Unless there are sooo many closed minded people, like you, who fault a person for making one mistake. How many mistakes can/will you own up to in your lifetime? C'mon get real? It's a DUI. Is it wrong? Yes. Look around and see the people who get DUI's in Winona. There are corporate leaders, college students and regular people, should they all be condemned because they aren't as perfect as you and made a decision to drive after a few? Let's look at our politicians...Does the name Kennedy ring a bell? I believe he is still in office. Lets get a little closer to home...Drazkowski? Wshat he was accused of is far worse than a DUI. The IMPORTANT thing is this - she DID NOT feel like she was too drunk to drive - even though she blew a .15, which at that time was one-and-a-half times the legal limit in Minnesota. However, nobody should drive even after only a FEW drinks. "
