Burglary prompts holiday warnings

.
A break-in at the home of seven Winona State University students Sunday prompted the police to issue some holiday safety warnings.

The burglary was reported Monday at 12:08 p.m. by a
19-year-old resident of the house on the 350 block of Grand Street. According to the police report, someone removed a storm window from inside the enclosed porch sometime after 8 p.m. Sunday. Once inside, bedroom doors were forced open, drawers were rummaged through and jewelry boxes were overturned.

So far the victims have reported a Winona State University-issued Gateway laptop, a 19-inch flat screen TV and some change missing from one bedroom. Most of the seven roommates had left for winter break and a full list of stolen items will be made upon their return.

Police have no suspects, but the investigation is ongoing.

Deputy Chief Paul Bostrack advised people

to use extra caution with

holiday gifts and to be on

the lookout for suspicious activity. He said people should never leave presents in plain sight inside their vehicles

and to keep vehicles and houses locked up. If you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood — lights on that usually aren’t or strange people nosing around homes — you should call police.
