Time for a neighborly discussion? Event seeks to build community

.
What a beautiful day in Winona’s neighborhoods it could be if neighbors talked to and helped each other.

That’s part of the idea of “Long Weekend: Neighborly Discussion for a Free Winona,” a community building event scheduled for today through Sunday at the Winona Arts Center.

It’s not just next-door neighbors organizers are thinking of, but rather thinking of people in the community at large as neighbors.

“Obviously helping one another is great,” said Tyler Reinhard, 20, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s when we do our greatest things.”

The idea of mutual aid rather than charity will be explored and encouraged. Mutual aid can be as simple as helping a friend move or having a neighborhood block party.

The event is designed to help bring the community together through discussion, food and film.

It kicks off with a potluck at 6 p.m. today. On Saturday, there will be short films as well as discussions of Food Not Bombs, a project to provide free vegetarian food and protest violence, and the Down n’ Dirty Bike Club, an ongoing effort to make free bikes available and to teach kids bike repair.

The first two days of events are free. There is a sliding scale fee for Sunday, when there will be interactive theater, a radical history of Minnesota, a “Caucus of the Future” presentation and a documentary about Community-Supported Agriculture.

Talking with our neighbors is one of the key goals.

“This is not intended to be a spectator thing. It’s intended to be participatory,” said Joe Kujawa, 21, another one of the event’s organizers. “We want people to feel like they’re part of the process.”

Both say events were chosen to help bring people from different walks of life together for discussion.

“There are huge problems people feel like they can’t tackle,” Kujawa said. “I feel like if we start locally, we can take them on in the community as a community.”

" I don't think I pointed a finger anywhere near you "Me". In fact, I agreed with what you had to say. I was making a general comment about the boards here at WDN online. Relax - maybe YOU should consider a busch light. I, on the other hand, prefer something with some flavor and character. "

" College Drunk- My comment was hardly a partisan political comment. It was just fact, not my opinion. You might want to finish off another Busch Light and do some of your own investigation. "

" Isn't "crimethinc" the same group which was around a few months ago teaching people about reusable menstural pads? This is the same group of unwashed who refuse to work....I wouldn't want eat at thier "Banquet" either.... Thier dogma is "Indigantcy instead of Deoderant", and "Don't work and cry we don't get an even shake, but everybody else will pay the Bills....." After this weekend, will they pick up all the crappy bikes they deposit all over town? They will be Dumpster diving behind Volunteer Services, mark my words.....Why do they get free press from the WDN? Losers!!!! "

" I am amazed how easily issues become partisan discussions/insults on these boards. "

" I'd wish the WDN would have told the entire story. A sponsor of this "get together" is CrimeThinc. This "organization" is a whacked out, leftist, anti authority group headed up by some real dandies that you often see digging through the trash for food (since few work). I'd be wary about eating anything at this get together. To bad they don't have any films about "How to get a job and be a normal part of society". "

" So apparently, LAX thinks that personal insults will cure what ails me. Ahhhh.....gotta love the superior attitude of our left-leaning friends. "

LAX wrote on Dec 7, 2007 3:13 PM:

" No, Squarehead, I don't think you need re-education, political or otherwise, even if I thought it was possible. An enema might help, however... "

The Squarehead wrote on Dec 7, 2007 9:32 AM:

" Sounds like LAX believes I need political "re-education". "

LAX wrote on Dec 7, 2007 9:05 AM:

" Sounds like Squarehead could benefit from attending these meetings and programs, given his very unneighborly comment. How is being neighborly and helping one another "radical"? I'm sure that if Squarefead wants to attend the meetings to promote being unneighborly or perhaps show some pro-war films, the other folks will try to listen in a neighborly way. Squarehead sounds like the guy who wrote a letter to the La Crosse Trib demanding that they write the "good news" about the war in Iraq. Since when is there any "good news" about a war? We wish you well, Squarehead. "

The Squarehead wrote on Dec 7, 2007 8:21 AM:

" Neighborly discussion? This just radical left-wing organizations recruiting people... "
