That’s part of the idea of “Long Weekend: Neighborly Discussion for a Free Winona,” a community building event scheduled for today through Sunday at the Winona Arts Center.

It’s not just next-door neighbors organizers are thinking of, but rather thinking of people in the community at large as neighbors.
“Obviously helping one another is great,” said Tyler Reinhard, 20, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s when we do our greatest things.”
The idea of mutual aid rather than charity will be explored and encouraged. Mutual aid can be as simple as helping a friend move or having a neighborhood block party.
The event is designed to help bring the community together through discussion, food and film.
It kicks off with a potluck at 6 p.m. today. On Saturday, there will be short films as well as discussions of Food Not Bombs, a project to provide free vegetarian food and protest violence, and the Down n’ Dirty Bike Club, an ongoing effort to make free bikes available and to teach kids bike repair.
The first two days of events are free. There is a sliding scale fee for Sunday, when there will be interactive theater, a radical history of Minnesota, a “Caucus of the Future” presentation and a documentary about Community-Supported Agriculture.
Talking with our neighbors is one of the key goals.
“This is not intended to be a spectator thing. It’s intended to be participatory,” said Joe Kujawa, 21, another one of the event’s organizers. “We want people to feel like they’re part of the process.”
Both say events were chosen to help bring people from different walks of life together for discussion.
“There are huge problems people feel like they can’t tackle,” Kujawa said. “I feel like if we start locally, we can take them on in the community as a community.”
