GUEST VIEW: Realities of a broken government are hitting our veterans hard

.
I am pleased to see the House of Representatives voted to attach a deadline for troop withdrawal from Iraq to the war supplemental funding bill (Rep. Tim Walz “yea,” Rep. Michele Bachmann “nay”).

Unfortunately, the Senate could not muster enough votes to pass it (Amy Klobuchar “yea,” Norm Coleman “nay”). Now administration officials, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, are threatening to shut down military bases and layoff Department of Defense employees.
I find it appalling that President George W. Bush scolded Congress and said they’re, “acting like a teenager with a new credit card.”

Face it, Bush is spending more on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than on domestic programs — most notably the expansion of the children’s health care program.

Reports now indicate that Bush threatens to veto a transportation and housing bill for $3 billion — of which a significant portion would be going to the rebuilding of the I-35W Bridge.

The Bush administration doesn’t realize the long-term medical costs and social implications of these wars.

Improvements to emergency medical care in the field have led to an increased number of our troops surviving life-threatening injuries.

As a result, many are being left maimed and/or have missing limbs. Estimated long-term health care for our disabled veterans could reach $660 billion, according to Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Furthermore, 250,000 to 400,000 new disabled veterans could be created as a result of Iraq and Afghanistan operations.

There was a very informative news cast on CNN called “Broken Government.” Numerous veterans tell about the difficulty they’ve encountered getting any benefits from the Veteran’s Administration.

In one case a veteran lost his right arm when his vehicle was blown apart from an improvised explosive device. He also received shrapnel wounds all over his body.

The VA denied his claim saying these shrapnel wounds were, “not service connected.” The VA employee who processed this veteran’s claim could not be identified. He/she cut out their name on the form. Acting VA Secretary Gordon Mansfield expressed his dismay and displeasure. He vowed to the reporter he’d cleanup the bureaucracy in the VA system.

Post-traumatic stress disorder cases are also on the rise as a result of these wars. Historically, social acclamation has always been a challenge for veterans returning from war zones. Recent news article estimates 25 percent of veterans seeking treatment at VA facilities suffer from mental health disorders. Treatment for PTSD at VA medical centers was at

$4.3 billion in 2004, with annual costs on the rise.

Recent news reports tell of veterans making up one of four homeless Americans. Some returning vets can’t find jobs and consequently can’t find an affordable place to live. Many of the Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have backgrounds in the infantry — an occupational field not needed in the civilian market place. Additionally, veterans suffering from emotional and mental trauma are at high risk for substance abuse.

Reports also reveal an increased possibility of spousal and sexual abuse as a result of the grisly events of the war.

Please support the efforts of Walz and Klobuchar in ending this madness and have our troops sent home as soon as possible.

" I just read where violence is down 55% in Iraq and the Iraqis are brokering a meeting between Iran and the US. Both the US and Iranian officials have agreed to the meeting, and "welcomed" the Iraqi intermediaries. Apparently, Iraqis and Iranians would prefer stability in the region and are inviting the US to participate. Let's see what happens. Good thing our men and women in the service are doing such great job despite all that liberal support! Maybe we can avoid WWIII. "

" To LAX you wrote: "The neocon, right-wing fruit propaganda is beyond pathetic -- it's out of touch with reality. If the surge is working so well, then we should be able to bring the soldiers home, right?" That pretty much makes my point for me right there. Thanks. "

Troller wrote on Nov 20, 2007 1:55 PM:

" Pilgrim. Sorry old pal, but an "insurgent" is just as much a foreigner in Iraq as an American in Iraq. The Iraqis may not want Americans there, but they really don't want insurgents blowing up their citizenry. (and that's what insurgents intentionally do) Also, Iraqis are turning in these insurgents more and more each day. "

" cewoodford, please don't associate my "handle" and liberal in the same sentence, it's embarrassing! Have a good one. "

" I think Lax has very competently expressed the far left liberal view and unfurled the liberal flag. Let's see if Lax missed anything? Misread my post, check. Denigrated to name calling in the first emotional outburst, check. Displayed a complete lack of comprehension on the war, check. Bashed Bush, check. Bashed everyone who doesn't drink the liberal kool-aid, check. And, demonstrated colossal ignorance and hatred, check and double check! Even pretended to care about the troops while exclaiming "Stupid, ignorant Americans". Yep, Lax is the kind of person we want running things ;( Lax's post was perfect example of socialist liberal argument on any issue. Good job X-Lax! "

Demosthenes wrote on Nov 20, 2007 1:18 PM:

" "the United States gets attacked because WE'RE OVER THERE". Haha, I like that...so you're saying that we were attacked on September 11th because we were over there? Please enlighten me on how that works, since we didn't go "over there" until AFTER the attacks. Try not to rant, it makes you look foolish. "

LAX wrote on Nov 20, 2007 12:45 PM:

" The neocon, right-wing fruit propaganda is beyond pathetic -- it's out of touch with reality. If the surge is working so well, then we should be able to bring the soldiers home, right? Oh no, the right-wingers say, "We have to stay until the job is finished." What a crock! By the way, the United States gets attacked because WE'RE OVER THERE screwing around in the internal affairs of countries where we have absolutely no business. How many more Americans and Iraqis will die today, tomorrow, the day after that and the weeks and months after that? Better order a whole bunch more black marble for another wall of names in Washington D.C!!! Then in 10-20 years Americans will go there and wail and blubber and wonder what the hell that one was all about, just like Viet Nam! Stupid, ignorant Americans. "

cewoodford wrote on Nov 20, 2007 12:06 PM:

" Not ONE mention of the Troop Surge working? IT IS. Dont want to talk about violence on a sharp decline in Iraq? Dont want to talk about civilian deaths taking a sharp decline? Dont want to talk about troop morale improving? What's wrong? Does that fly in the face of your political dogma? More pathetic Liberal propaganda. "

cewoodford wrote on Nov 20, 2007 12:02 PM:

" Another "raise the white flag" article. Followed by a liberal trollers with their typical name calling. I will however say that I did get a chuckle from the use of CNN as a no-biased news source...good one. Alright, lets play it your way. Lets bring ALL the troops home on Sunday. We'll all agree to be isolationists and we'll simply wait for the next attack to occur on US soil, because that's EXACTLY what will happen. Thank GOD our forefathers had the tenacity and courage in the 1940's to fight evil...something seriously missing in todays power hungry far-left. If you think us pulling out of the MidEast now will make terrorists complacent and leave the US alone you're sadly mistaken. But go ahead, raise that white flag "

Pilgrim wrote on Nov 20, 2007 10:38 AM:

" A note to Mr. Fishnuts: Just a reminder that in Iraq Americans are the foreigners and the insurgents believe they are defending their homeland. "

Demosthenes wrote on Nov 20, 2007 9:36 AM:

" "they'd cut funds for battlefield medicine". Unless I misread my own post, I wrote "Give them what they need", that would INCLUDE battlefield medicine and health care. The generals we have running this war are the best in the world, but they are being handcuffed by the dems in congress who are cutting their ability to fight a war. It's a war, let them fight it, and it will be won. Try watching BOTH Foxnews and CNN. One shows mostly the good things that are happening, and the other shows the bad. Combine them, and you get the real picture of what's going on in this war. Or better yet, talk to the men and women fighting, and you will find the truth about this war, and the truth is that we are winning, and will win. "

LAX wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:37 AM:

" The only "pap" is the pap that comes out of the White House every day...big talk from tin-horn Bushies about "getting the job done" when they don't have a clue as to what they're doing. And then nitwits like Troller, Demosthenes and Fishnuts who get their "brains" from Rush "Drugs" Limbaugh, Bill Orally and Eva von Coulter, repeat their garbage. When "the war" goes badly they blame the newspapers...typical. But then they need to find a scapegoat for their own failings... "

LAX wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:28 AM:

" Troller and Demosthenes are a real winners. Troller would deny benefits out of some right-wing paranoid fear of so-called "socialism." Bush used the same insanity to veto the recent SCHIP bill. As for Demosthenes, he/she blames news stories about wounded veterans not getting health care for demoralizing the troops. Typical Bush tactic. It never occurs to these idiots that troops are demoralized not because of news stories, but because they can't get healthcare — and because they're stuck in a non-winnable war with pi$$-poor leaders. Leave it to Troller, Demosthenes and Bush and they'd cut funds for battlefield medicine therebye solving the "problem" of those pesky soldiers surviving previously fatal wounds and continuing to live to cost the "system" more money! To their way of thinking if only those soldiers would just die, we wouldn't have to treat them for the next 20,30, 40 years... "

    Fishnuts2 wrote on Nov 20, 2007 8:19 AM:

" Apparently Mr. Orlowski belongs to the Democrat Insurgent Party. They do not support our troops or their Commander in Chief. Our troops fight and give their time and lives and then get to hear this pap from back home. If America stood solid behind our troops it would demoralize the foreign Insurgents, instead of demoralizing our troops! "

Troller wrote on Nov 20, 2007 7:30 AM:

" If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it's free! -P.J. O'Rourke "

Troller wrote on Nov 20, 2007 7:28 AM:

" I agree, veterans deserve a lot more than they are getting. But you have to read these type of articles very carefully. The agenda here is not veterans, but socialism. The complaint is not about veteran's services, it's about Bush. This article is an anti-war protest, anti-Bush rant. These people think they a "clever" because they wrap the argument in a very genuine issue which needs addressing. This country can well afford to take care of our veterans, AND continue winning the war on terrorist currently being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. But neither will happen if we cow-tow to the socialist liberal left. You have to read between the lines on this one. "

Demosthenes wrote on Nov 20, 2007 1:11 AM:

" It's people like this that demoralize our soldiers. When the men and women fighting for our country hear things like this, it demoralizes them. It's no wonder they come home with mental disorders, when their own country won't support what they are fighting for. These brave soldiers need the funding to win this war, and to do their jobs. Give them what they need, and they will continue to win this war. Sure, they want to come home, but not until they finish their jobs. "
