" What a true democratic society we live in! I don't remember voting on a smoking ban. This is just another example of liberals wanting to control everyones lives. I am a smoker and have no problem stepping outside to smoke however when it is 10 below zero out I will be at home, not the bars. As far as the decline in bar business I believe accurate numbers will be known after winter, and lets not forget next summer when the college kids are gone. Good luck bar owners, you're gonna need it. "

" I think we are all forgeting the fact that the Government made this choice and not just non-smokers. I am a smoker and yes I still go to the Bars. I just don't go as often. I believe that we all have a right to choose how we keep our bodies healthy (or otherwise). It is an inconvenience for me to step outside and smoke....but I smoke less! Maybe that IS a step in the right direction. As for the local Bars business will eventually pick up again when everybodies heads finally cool. "

Ps to CTROCK there is a free toilet on broadway maybe you should go grab then the college kids next to you have a place to go LOL "

" Ok, we have a singer who is in a bar 5 nights a week...Where is there a band in Winona during the week? I think someone is fibbing here...Even with Kaoroke, 5 nights a week in Winona and if that's the case, I am glad I'm not there.
As a former smoker, I can tell you that non-smokers are bragging about the whole clean air thing in the bars. They are annoying. My group of friends have been holding more home parties because a majority of them smoke, so we just hang at various houses now. And I'm not a college student, but a local Winonan who has been in these bars since I was under the legal age many years ago. I think it should be up to the bar to decide and of the non-smokers don't like it, here's smoke in your face! "

" We went out for Halloween and it was great to come home without having to hang our costumes outside. We had a blast and didn't have sore eyes or lungs the next day. Big difference! The bar we were at was known for not having the best ventilation befrore the ban. As far as comments go, wouldn't the non-smokers whining before the ban be just as loud as the non-smokers gloating after the ban? Just a thought to consider... "

" Customers demand fresh beer, so it stands to reason that a distributor would not load up a bar with more kegs, cans or bottles than needed between orders. A month is plenty long enough to get a sense of changes in sales volume. BUTTERFLY is "sure" that bars have an average they order each month. I'd love to know how BUTTERFLY is "sure" of this. I would think beer and liquor sales fluctuate for all sorts of reasons, so I am not going to make any such claim of certain knowledge. Common sense tells me a standard regular order is extremely unlikely. "

" BUTTERFLY, your reply to me changed nothing. I didn't have any trouble comprehending what you wrote in your original comment. What you don't understand is, you are telling everyone you don't want to patronize the bars because you don't want to listen to non-smokers 'gloating'. But you yourself wrote that you haven't yet been to a bar since the ban took effect, so how would you know that is happening? Also, again, if you don't want the bars you WENT to to close, get out of the house and onto your favorite barstool, pronto! "

Like I said, wait until the tax receipts come in. That will tell the TRUE story. "

" Why would the bar owners lie? Its a State law not a city law, not like proving they are LOSING business is going to affect the outcome of anything. The bar I choose to frequent is WAY down on business. I'm not a smoker but am tired of non smokers thinking they are above everyone else. I witnessed someone leaving their cigs and lighter on a bar so it was handy to take outside and of course a non smoker complained and demanded them to be put away. Get over yourselves! And by the way, I go to the bar to drink pop ( non drinker) maybe I should start ratting on the people that have drank too much and may be endangering MY life when I leave that establishment.Hoorah for you Misskitty , you went out 5 nights in a week, get a LIFE.

" I think this is great to teach those college students a lesson, but I feel I should be able to smoke if I wanta. I got into an argument over at one of the bars with the bartender because he wouldn't let me light up. I even asked the other patrons if it would bother them and they said it was no problem to them. But the stupid barkeep told me I had to go if I lit up cuz he could get in trouble. Ain't my problem and I feel I should have the right to smoke where I wanta. I'VE HAD IT! "

" I'm pretty sure bars order beer more than once a month. I'd guess at LEAST once a week. It's already been one month. We sell some beer and wine at the restaurant I manage. At our place, the distributor checks our inventory and leaves what he thinks we'll need, presumably based on past history. I would assume it's the same at bars. If bars have seen a "steep decline" in business, obviously they would need less beer. If their order remained the same despite fewer sales, by now they would have a substantial inventory backed up. "

" Ok Perfect Stranger....Ii don't go to the bars because I don't like listening to nonsmokers say how happy they are...it really pisses me off to have to sit and listen to them, so if they weren't in the bars I would start going again, therefore it is the non smokers faults that I am not patronizing the local bars anymore. Get it!!
Also I am sure bar owners just have an average that they order each month. That would be why the distribitors have not notice a decline... Just wait it will happen. "

I choose to stay home to drink cause no one is going to force me to stand outside while I am trying to have a beer and relax!! "

" I'm trying to understand how BUTTERFLY can claim that nonsmokers will be at fault for "...shutting down Winona's small bars!!!" when BUTTERFLY admits to not having been to a bar since the smoking ban was enacted. BUTTERFLY is contributing to the very problem (she?) bemoans. If patrons want the bars to survive, they must remain active patrons. I also would like to know why the distributor hasn't seen a slowdown in deliveries, yet some bar owners claim reduced sales. Something isn't right here... "

I don't go to bars normally and doubt I ever will but when a bar has a restaurant it is a pleasure to not come out not stinking and still able to breathe. I have no sympathy for smokers but have a high regard for myself and other people who value their health! "

" I am a singer and I have asthma. I was in a lot of pain after spending a night in a bar. Not anymore and I find myself going out to more bars than I used to (5 nights this past week). If I have a choice between a bar here in Winona or one across the river, I decide to stay right here in town. I have noticed a lot of new people coming out and the places that I go are filling up quite early in the evening whereas before, it would be towards the end of the night. Perhaps the bars that are seeing a decline in business are losing customers because the customers have found more interesting places to go. "

I feel really bad for small bar owners that cannot even smoke in the building they spent their savings to buy/own. I personally have not been to a bar since the smoking ban, just for the simple fact I am so sick of hearing how happy the non smokers are. So please by all means enjoy your time shutting down Winona's small town bars!!! "

We went to Bub's yesterday for the first time in years, and would not have done so if it was still smoky - what a pleasant change to find clean, breathable air! Losing the stench of cigarettes makes us far more willing to go out and enjoy Winona's restaurants, and makes the food taste better. "
