On Oct. 18, 2006, Leroy Robert Bronk was loading soybeans from a hopper at Rolling Ridge Grain near Altura, Minn., when the silo collapsed. He was buried under soybeans for nearly 15 minutes before rescuers reached him. Bronk died the next morning at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
According to court documents, Rolling Ridge Grain is owned by Brian Moran and insured by Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance Company. In a settlement reached Oct. 11, the insurer was ordered to pay lump sums of a little more than $1 million to Bronk’s wife, Bernice Bronk, $10,000 each to Bronk’s mother and five siblings and about $536,000 to Sherburne Law Offices of Minneapolis for attorney’s fees.
