George L. Kukowski

ST. ANTHONY, Minn. — George L. Kukowski, 90, of St. Anthony and formerly of Austin, Minn., and Winona, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at St. Anthony Health Care.
He was born in Winona on Aug. 10, 1917, the son of Albert and Louise (Janikowski) Kukowski.
George was a retired foreman for Archer-Daniels-Midland of Winona. He resided in Winona until moving to Austin in 1972 and then to St. Anthony in 2005.
He was united in marriage to Helen C. Keifer at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona on July 14, 1941. She died May 26, 1966.
He then married Eleanor Baldus on June 18, 1971. She died Jan. 21, 1999.
George was a former member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona and a former member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Austin.
George is survived by four sons, the Rev. Richard G. (Elaine Klein) Kukowski, Silver Springs, Md., Donald R. (Marsha) Kukowski, Winona, Paul M. (Mary) Kukowski, Camano Island, Wash., and William C. (Nancy) Kukowski, St. Anthony, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Todd, Trisha, Jennifer, Keegan, Lynnae, Lisa, Andrew and Timothy; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Ryan, Kaitlynn, Adam, Allyson, Erin, Samantha and Geoff; six step-grandchildren, Michael, Tony, Eric, Melissa, Heidi and Jacob; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a stepson, Walter (Jan) Baldus, Austin, Minn.; step-daughter, Sharon (Richard) Schleich, Owatonna, Minn.; and sister-in-laws, Ruth Kukowski and Betty Mlynczak, both of Winona.
George was preceded in death by his parents; wives; son, David; step-son, Darrell Baldus; step-daughter, Jannell Bausch; brothers, Roy and James; half-brother, Robert Mlynczak; and step-father, Frank Mlynczak.
Dad had many interests including the history and changes of Winona, taking walks at the Mill pond in Austin, playing slots at a casino and playing cribbage.
A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona, the Rev. Thomas Hargesheimer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Casket bearers will be his grandchildren, Todd Kukowski, Trisha Olsen, Jennifer Joda and Lynnae, Andrew and Timothy Kukowski.
In lieu of flowers, the family is arranging a memorial to him.

Avonelle M. Pelofske
Avonelle M. Pelofske, 87, of Winona died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
She was born May 6, 1920, in Minneiska, Minn., to Mathias and Mary (Smocke) Heaser.
Avonelle married Loren P. Pelofske in Minneiska.
She worked as a dietary cook at both the Watkin’s Home and the Starzecki Home. She also worked for the Boston Bakery and Kwik Trip.
Avonelle was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Winona. She was also active in the Winona Senior Friendship Center and held memberships in both TOPS and the Catholic Aid Association.
She loved animals, especially her bird, Sunny, and also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing solitaire. She will always be remembered for her excellent cooking.
Avonelle is survived by her husband, Loren, of Lake Winona Manor; children, Jacquelyn (Richard) Will of Goodview, Minn., Paul (Tammy) Pelofske of Wabasha, Minn., and Heidi (Terry) Joyce of Rochester, Minn.; grandchildren, Jodi Will of Richmond, Va., Jeffrey (Cheryl) Will of Winona, Jason Will of Goodview, Kristi (Doug) Goessman of Bozeman, Mont., Katy (Tim) Breen of Seattle, Wash., Matthew Pelofske of Taos, N.M., and Molly Joyce of River Falls, Wis. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and other relatives and friends.
Avonelle was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Winona. The Rev. Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minneiska.
Friends may call at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Winona from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007.
Pallbearers will be Lavern Heaser, Alan Heaser, Jeffrey Will, Jason Will, Karen Heizler and Arvid Plein.

HOLMEN, Wis. — Kimberly C. “Kimmy” Coppens, 19, of Holmen died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, in La Crosse, Wis.
She was born in Brunswick, Maine, on Nov. 17, 1987, to David and Linda (Bard) Coppens.
Kimmy attended St. James Grade School and graduated from Holmen High School, Class of 2006. She currently was enrolled in Western Technical College in the nursing program.
Kimmy is survived by her parents, Dave and Linda Coppens of Holmen; her sister Jennifer “Jenny” of Holmen; maternal grandparents Conrad Bard of Lewiston, Maine; paternal grandparents John K. and Rachel R. Coppens of Topsham, Maine; her aunts and uncles Richard (Linda) Bard, Roger (Lorraine) Bard, Alfred (Jo Anne) Bard, who are her godparents, Raymond (Debbie) Bard of Augusta, Maine, Kevin (Cheryl) Coppens of Topsham, Maine, and Annie (Joel) Tripp of Saco, Maine. Kimmy is further survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and all that knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Cecile Theriault.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, in St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia St., La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate, with burial to be held in Green Mound Cemetery, Holmen.

Leon Peter Edel, 73, 1010 East Broadway, Winona, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Lake Winona Manor.
He was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Winona to Peter and Gertrude (Knopick) Edel.
Leon married Cecelia Loeffen-Orlikowski on Oct. 17, 1964, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.
He was employed as an ironworker with the Iron Workers Union 512.
Leon was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona, an active member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post No. 9, and the Left Hander’s Club. Leon was a life member of the NRA, and loved deer hunting, shooting his guns and reloading ammunition.
Leon is survived by his loving wife, Cecelia of Winona; son, Kevin (Amy) Edel of Milaca, Minn.; step-son, Dennis Orlikowski of Winona; step-daughter, Donna (Dennis) Burns of Lewiston; grandchildren, Karie (Jason) Zimmerman, Jeff (JoAnn) Burns, Joseph Burns, Gina (Kevin) Rippentrop, Sean Orlikowski, Kacy Orlikowski, Kevin Edel Jr., Erica and Cheyanna Edel; great-grandchildren, Jaymi Buege, Hunter Zimmerman, Carter and Alissa Rippentrop, Riley Burns, Kaylyn Orlikowski; sisters, Mary Beyer of Winona and Jane Habeck of Winona; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

RED WING, Minn. — Sharon Kaye Arms, 61, of Red Wing died Saturday at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. She was born Nov. 12, 1945, in St. Paul and adopted by Lloyd and Flossie (Nielson) Gerdes of Red Wing.
She attended Burnside School, Red Wing Central High School and Zumbrota High School. She also attended Red Wing Technical College.
In 1963, she married Paul Wacker, and they later divorced. She married Erie Allan VanMeveren, and they later divorced. On May 22, 1975, she married Lewis Arms in Isanti, Minn.
She worked as a bartender and waitress in Granite Falls, CDCC (Chemical Dependency Communication Consultants) in Lake City, United Telephone, Lake City, and Lake City Hospital and was a district agent for Prudential Insurance in Lake City. She then was employed by IBM and for 10 years worked as a financial worker for Wabasha County and also was self-employed with Medicaid Advisors.
She enjoyed going to the casino, sewing, fishing and agate hunting.
Survivors include her husband, Lewis; four daughters, Brenda Wohlers of Altura, Minn., Cristy Wacker of Rochester, Barbara Wacker and Bonnie Wacker both of Lake City; one son, Timothy VanMeveren of Red Wing; three grandchildren, Kailey Wacker and Alex and McKenzie Wohlers; one sister, Sheila Mogard of Hutchinson; two half brothers, Douglas (Kathy) Latew of Germantown, Ohio, and Melvin (Rose Marie) Malchow of New Berlin, Wis.; and one aunt, Lu Chamberlain of Red Wing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson and one half brother, Duane Gerdes.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with the Rev. Lynne Rigg officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service.

Helen Carol Friese, 89, a Minnesota City resident and for the last five years, residing at her daughter’s home in Arcadia, Wis., died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007.
Helen was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Winona to Earl and Julia (Boardman) Rouse.
She married Ray E. Friese on Dec. 3, 1938, in Decorah, Iowa.
Her husband preceded her in death on June 6, 1997.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Rouse; and four sisters, Adeline Ledebuhr, Eva Gable, Hazel Critzman and Nellie Niemeyer.
Helen was a working mother all her life. She was last employed at Winona State University from which she retired at age 62.
She was loved and cared for everyone.
She is survived by two sons, Ray Friese and Steven Friese, Minnesota City; four daughters Jenene Lobner, Fay Friese, Shelly Kutchara, Arcadia, Wis.; Carol (Warren) Johnson, Brainerd, Minn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Chaplain Bill Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Freemont Scotch Cemetery.
