WSU ROUNDUP: Warriors soccer team upsets top-ranked Metro State
DENVER, Colo. — Heidi Woerle connected on a penalty kick four minutes before the half Saturday afternoon to lead the Winona State University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 upset victory over Metropolitan State College of Denver.
The loss marked just the second time since 2002 that the Roadrunners, ranked No. 1 in the nation and the defending NCAA Division II national champions, lost a game at home.
WSU’s victory came two days after falling 1-0 to the Colorado School of Mines — also on a penalty kick.
The Roadrunners (2-1) outshot WSU 12-5, but Amanda Diehm had to make just three saves in goal for the Warriors (2-1).

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Carmen Stankowski is just a sophomore, but she’s playing like a seasoned veteran.
The 5-8 outside hitter recorded a pair of double-doubles in leading Winona State to wins over St. Joseph’s 3-2 (30-27, 15-30, 30-32, 30-24, 15-6) and Southern Indiana 3-1 (31-29, 30-21, 20-30, 30-26).
WSU (6-3) went 3-1 at the Flyer Invitational. Stankowski had 23 kills and 11 digs in the win over St. Joe’s and 15 kills and 17 digs in the win over S. Indiana.
“We went to her a lot in the first match,” WSU coach Connie Metille said. “She had 48 swings against St. Joseph’s.”
Though a sophomore, Stankowski was one of the veterans for WSU, which has three injured starters.
Freshman Susan Clausen filled in admirably for injured setter Lisa Dobie. Clausen had 61 assists in the first match and 51 in the second.
In the first match, Kim Nemcek had 14 kills, Mollie Bjelland had 14 kills and Kiersten Arendt had 13 kills and four block assists.
In the second match Nemcek had 15 kills and Arendt had 14 kills, two aces. Rudi Balich had 30 digs in the first and 26 digs, two aces in the second.
