After a five-set thriller late Friday, in which WSU came back from a two-set deficit to beat host Adams State (Colo.) 26-30, 26-30, 30-28, 30-26, 15-13, the Warriors picked up their third win of the season late Saturday with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 31-29) win over Dixie State (Utah).
The quality start to the season came without injured fourth-year starter Lisa Dobie, who is still recovering from a minor knee injury.
“We are thrilled to be 3-1,” WSU coach Connie Mettille said. “We grew a lot as a team. We had to fight back numerous times and we did that.”
Warriors junior Rudi Balich had 72 digs over the weekend. Sophomore Carmen Stankowski had 19 kills against both Grand Canyon and Dixie State and 14 kills against Adams State.
Warriors freshman Kim Nemcek, who replaced Dobie at setter, had 15 kills against Adams State and 11 kills in a 3-0 (30-12, 30-24, 30-25) loss Saturday to Western New Mexico.
The Warriors host South Dakota at 7 p.m. Tuesday at McCown Gymnasium for their home opener and “Pack the Gym” night.
After 982 fans came out for the event last year, WSU hopes to draw 1,000 fans for this year’s event.
