Waits wins caution-heavy feature at Tri-Oval Speedway

.
FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — Dirt track auto racing and rain might as well be water and motor oil. So while overnight storms Thursday probably had area farmers smiling, things weren’t nearly as cheerful for the Tri-Oval Speedway faithful in anticipation of Friday’s race night.

However, it mostly amounted to water under the bridge for Tri-Oval. The track was snarly at times — the modified feature was paced by at least four caution laps — but as they say, the track was the same for everybody. Better yet, a full Friday night of racing carried on as scheduled.
All it took after track owner Jeff Duellman arrived at the race track Friday morning and found the infield flooded with rainwater, was a little overtime, Duellman said.

Brad Waits took the checkered flag in the caution-heavy open modified feature. It was his 25th win of the season.

Waits leads the USRA National point standings. It seems the $10,000 first place prize money grows closer by the lap for Waits.

“It’s been running real good,” he said. “This is the best year I’ve ever had by far.”

Waits credited a February trip to speed week in Florida for his new-found success. Waits spent nine days racing with drivers from around the country at speed week and said he picked up some useful information. What exactly he learned?

“I can’t tell you that,” he said. “Not even.”

“I talked to a few people,” Waits went on to say, “and they were doing it a little different. I just kind of started to do what the car wanted me to do instead always thinking that I knew what it wanted.”

Meanwhile in the pit, Kevin Glander was celebrating his superstock feature win with a sponsor and his nine-year-old daughter Laura.

The Glanders — Kevin, Laura and Kevin’s wife — left their campground at Jellystone and went straight to the Tri-Oval. Glander’s sponsor brought the car.

“I still have my flip-flops and sandals on,” Glander said.

It turned out to be a trip worth taking for the Glanders. Of course, there were no complaints from Laura.

“She’s my number one fan,” Glander said.

Apparently a good luck charm as well. She kissed her father’s car before each round of racing. And as it would turn out, even away from Jellystone, her father was one happy camper.

Kyle Jumbeck of Houston, Minn., won the Midwest modified feature race. Danny Hanson of Alma won the street stock feature.
