Plans in the works to rename WSU stadium

.
Winona State University’s football stadium soon will have a new name.

Larry Holstad, director of athletics, said Tuesday that Alltel Wireless plans to rename Maxwell Field at Midwest Wireless Stadium.
Alltel agreed to purchase Midwest Wireless in 2005 and completed the deal in October. It announced Monday it had changed the name of Midwest Wireless Civic Center in Mankato, Minn., to the Alltel Center.

Holstad said his understanding is that WSU’s football stadium will become Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.

Alltel declined comment Tuesday, saying it would address the issue in a week.

“It’s my understanding that their plans are to change the name,” Holstad said.

“It’s their responsibility to change all the signage (around campus), and I believe they’re working on doing that.”

Holstad said he expects the changes to be made in time for the start of the school year. The Warriors host Michigan Tech in the season opener Aug. 25.

Midwest Wireless paid $250,000 in 2004 for the right to name the stadium.

Maxwell Field is named for college president Guy Maxwell, who served from 1904 until his death in 1939.

" Commercialization pays the bills buddy, unless you want to shell out the money to suport University operations. I think we should name the stadium Connie Mettille Field for all her contributions to WSU athletics. Keep it up girl!! "

" Everyone calls it Maxwell Field anyway. If Winona State can make a few bucks from some company that wants to pay for press boxes, I say go for it. If you ask me, its time Winona State takes it even further and starts allowing beer advertisement, and beer sales at games. "

" WDN is a newspaper, not the historical society. And Maxwell Field will still be the name of the field. Thats not changing at all. also, most of that money goes right into the athletic programs, funding the bus rides, hotel stays, new equipment, scholarships, etc... so instead of just having an average athletic department, we can have an exceptional one. name one bad sport at WSU right now. cant? thats due to the "commercialization" of college sports. im sure that WSU will survive without your $50 a year. "

" What's the matter...you don't know the words to the song? You make my point very well -- college sports are commercialized and run just like big business and that's EXACTLY what is wrong with sports today, whether college or professional. It's all about MONEY! If this is what you want, you can keep it. Since Midewest Wireless/Alltel is giving so much money to WSU for naming rights(aka advertising), then I refuse to send WSU any more alumni contributions. And byt the way, the reason it was named for Guy Maxwell was to remember the man and his accomplishments -- thus it would be good if those accomplishments were periodically revisited -- but the WDN doesn't have that much imagination. "

" First of all, the article was not geared toward the history of the stadium and Guy Max-well. It was about a name change, so why are we so upset? Secondly, WSU's "commercialization" of the athletic program has made it one of the most prolific in NCAA Division II. Without naming rights, corporate partenrships and things like that, Winona State would be marred in obscurity like UM-Morris or Crookston. Come on people, before we go and attack WSU and the WDN, lets get our facts straight. "

" We are lucky to keep Maxwell's name on the stadium at all. UM-Mankato's basketball arena is just named Alltell Center. We should be congratulating Larry Holstad and his staff for their commitment to being a D-II powerhouse. "

Too bad... wrote on Jul 11, 2007 10:09 AM:

" the WDN can't provide more info about Guy Maxwell other than just a couple of dates. Typical lousy WDN work! "

This is stupid... wrote on Jul 11, 2007 8:04 AM:

" It's Maxwell Field and always will be Maxwell Field -- long after Midwest Wireless and Alltel and whoever buys Alltel are long gone and forgotten. Too bad Holstad and WSU allow this kind of commercialization. It cheapens the whole University. "
