Man arrested for DUI after offering police a ride

.
Police say a drunk driver staggered up to two police investigators and offered them a ride. Instead they gave him a ride to jail.

The plain clothes investigators using an unmarked squad car were interviewing a witness June 8 on East Fifth Street near Mankato Avenue when a GMC Jimmy cruised past and parked about 45 feet away.
According to police, the driver got out of the truck and approached the officers but had trouble walking straight and maintaining balance. He then asked if they needed a ride.

Police referred the 47-year-old man to the county attorney’s office with recommended charges of gross misdemeanor drunken driving

and driving after revocation on the results of a blood

test that showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.17, more than twice the legal limit.

After identifying themselves, the officers did a field sobriety test. The driver was taken the hospital as a precaution because of a pre-existing medical condition and blood was drawn to test for intoxicants.

" This is ridiculous. Someone was trying to do a good deed and help some people out that he thought were in trouble, and this is the thanks he gets. Like my friends at planned parenthood say, if you don't agree with this behavior, don't do it. But don't tell others how to live their lives. The Bible speaks against drunkeness, but the Government has no business legislating personal religious issues. That is akin to establishing a national religion. We must be united for the separation of church and state. "

" The police did a blood draw. That can take a few weeks before the test results are back, meaning the guy wasn't charged with DWI until just now. "

" As you read, the cops took blood. The blood has to be sent off to the state for testing. All this takes time. We all know how fast the state is. I'm shocked the blood test came back in less than a month. "

" These clowns are giving the rest of us drunks a bad name. First some dizzy blonde goes out crashing cones on Broadway, then tells the cops she is the "designated driver". Now this idiot offers cops a ride. Pretty soon, no self respecting drunk will be able to show his or her face in this town... "

To Why all the secrecy. wrote on Jul 4, 2007 3:28 PM:

" This is quick, do you know how long it takes for a blood draw to come back from the state crime lab? Sometimes as long as 3 months. This made it back in one month and then he was recommended for charges and that is where the WDN gets the information. His name is not public until he is officially charged. So this guy probobly doesn't even know the results yet but will get a complaint in the mail. Think before you criticize, learn the story. "

" This happened a month ago. Why the delay in releasing this, and why hide his identity? The strangest things happen in this oddball town. "
