The Minnesota Music Educators Association named Cotter Band Director Dave Gudmastad music teacher of the year.
Gudmastad, who is starting his 21st year of teaching, was chosen because of his experience and success.
Gudmastad, who since 1987 has been Cotter’s band director and Visual and Performing arts department chairman, has helped the school band win 59 awards in the past four years. The band has played everywhere from Washington, D.C. to Mount Rushmore to Canada.
In order to receive this award, the winner must be a member of the association, have a minimum of 10 years teaching experience, and serve outside of the school district.
Gudmastad has served on the board of directors for the Minnesota Music Educators Association and the music advisory council for the Minnesota State High School League; and he’s a part of Winona Brass Band, International Association of Jazz Educators and several other music groups around the state and region.
He said it’s nice to be recognized by peers, but that the band’s success is about the students’ dedication.
He said they keep him on his toes, which has led to better programs and performances.
Gudmastad will receive his award in February.
