DODGE CENTER, Minn. — Lee Trocinski was about the only pitcher the Winona Chiefs amateur baseball team had to throw on Sunday.
Trocinski was the only pitcher the Chiefs needed, too.
He went all nine innings and struck out 15 in leading Winona to a 7-1 win over Dodge Center.
“He was lights out,” Winona coach Ryan Buhler said. “It’s a little rare for him to go nine, but we didn’t have any other pitchers today. And it was nice not to have to go to anybody else.”
Trocinski struck out the side in the first inning. He struck out the side in the last inning. He struck out the side somewhere in the middle, as well. He had a no-hitter going through 52/3 and threw 136 pitches.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth when Winona (11-8, 6-0) finally got on the board with one run . The Chiefs put up four in the fifth inning to break things open.
Arron Merchlewitz was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Travis Hengel and teammate Jeff Stier were both 3-for-5. Hengel and Matt Barrie had two RBIs. Barrie also stole two bases.
Winona had seven steals as a team, after five steals the night before.
“We took advantage of some things last couple games,” Buhler said. “We have a couple guys that can really run.”
