Thieves steal two cars, try for third

.
Two cars were stolen and a third broken into in a parking lot in the 1700 block of West Wabasha Street overnight Wednesday.

Two heavily modified import cars valued at about $15,000 each were reported missing Thursday morning. Both owners told police the cars were locked and they had the keys.
One car is a white 1996 Acura Integra. The second, a two-door, yellow 1997 Honda Civic was stripped to the primer on the left rear quarterpanel.

While police were taking the theft reports Thursday morning, a 20-year-old man reported his 1992 Eagle

Talon was damaged in the same parking lot. He found damage to the door handle and inside the car. The dash was ripped apart

around the steering, the ignition was damaged and now the key doesn’t work. About $1,000 worth of gauges and a $300 Pioneer faceplate were stolen.

Winona police Deputy Chief Paul Bostrack said

the owners of the cars know each other and the suspects could be acquaintances. The case is under further investigation while police interview people who may have information regarding the thefts.

For now, the license plate numbers and vehicle identification numbers have been entered into a national database that will raise flags if the cars are spotted.

" People on here are so RUDE! Living there doesn't mean you are working the system! A lot of people just moved from out of town, or are trying to get back on their feet! I used to live there for 3 months till new apt opened up and then moved out. And saying that it is a mess and dirty!! Don't feel bad for your friends who live there...cant they clean up after themselves??? If they didn't want to live in urine, they should clean their home, and take care of it! Those apts are being renovated, any person would be proud to live there if they weren't called the "maplewood townhomes"(sneering) Im glad to get out of this horrible town! shallow people! "

" I've SEEN the type of people who live in housing. My school bus used to stop there every day, and I had a few friends from school who lived there also. I'm not saying that EVERYONE who is there is taking advantage of it, but a LOT of them are. And it's not just the "living off welfare" issue, it's how they take care of the places...or the LACK of care. Most the apartments I went to, I felt BAD that my friends had to live in that environment. Trash everywhere, smells of rotting food and urine - it was disgusting. And yet there are these "pimped out" cars they spend hours and money on? Something is wrong with that picture. "

" you know how much we spent on those cars.. its not like we have no lives or jobs... we took the time on own to put those parts on.. this is a small town.. who would of thought this would ever happened... we bust our asses off for the parts it not even like we stole them parts and put it on our cars.. our hands worked for those parts... no one understands how it feels until it happens to them.. DONT JUDGE THE OWNERS OF THE CARS THAT WERE STOLEN... ITS NOT THEIR FALUT THEY GOT NICE CARS... AND THOSE TO ATTEMED TO STOLE FROM OTHERS.. KARMA... "WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND" JUST WAIT YOUR TURN... WE MAY HAVE NOT SEEN YOU DO IT, BUT GOD SEES EVERY STEP AND MOVE YOU MAKE.. -REMEMBER THAT! "

" Maybe they should spend their money and time on a nice suit/work clothes and either going to school or putting out resumes and getting a job instead of on cars and get themselves OUT of the housing. Housing isn't supposed to be for people like this, but sadly, that's all it is nowadays. "

JED wrote on Jun 24, 2007 8:29 AM:

" I would guess that the modifications were things such as stereo systems, chrome rims, fancy gauges for the speedometer and tachometer, custom paint jobs and the like. It is questionable how a 10 year old stock car stripped to the primer on one panel could be worth $15,000, even if it is heavily modified. Even if $7,000 was paid for the car, that's still $8,000 that went into improvements. It took me 2 1/2 years to pay about that much for my car. How long does it take to make and pay for these modifications? "

" Don't worry about the local police looking into property damage. From my own experience of someone damaging my car while it was parked on Market St. They will not raise a finger to do a thing about. "

Spare Me wrote on Jun 23, 2007 9:45 PM:

" A 1996 car with 10,000 miles on it. That isn't even a 1000 miles a year. And as far as I'm concerned, if their car is worth even $7,000 they don't belong on welfare. Sell the car, get a real job, and get off the taxpayers payroll. All that hard work could have gone toward a PAYING factory job, not on pimping out their cars. "

Not Fair wrote on Jun 23, 2007 7:17 PM:

" Yeah it must be nice to live in public housing and pay little or nothing for rent and then have a nice car to drive around in! No doubt they get some type of state aide help, I thought your car could only be of certain value! Must be nice to be able to have such nice cars! I suppose we as tax payers paid for those people too! "

Hard work increased the value of the cars wrote on Jun 23, 2007 2:09 PM:

" A 1996 Acura Integra GS-R Sport Coupe 2D with a very modest 10,000 miles on it has a blue book retail value of just under $7,000. It would not be at all surprising if the owners purchased their cars for quite a bit less than that. If the cars are valued at $15,000 it is only because the 'heavily modified' vehicles had a lot of labor-intensive changes to them--probably done by the owners themselves. In other words, the cars are only worth $15,000 because the owners put forth a lot of hard work to make them that way. This should blow a hole in the stereotypes about the type of people living on assisted living. "

Worth 15 grand? wrote on Jun 23, 2007 12:13 PM:

" I don't care how "heavily modified" cars were. There is no way on earth they were worth 15,000 dollars. Ayone else smell insurance fraud? "

My thoughts exactly wrote on Jun 23, 2007 12:09 PM:

" If you own a $15,000 car, you have no right to be living in the public assisted living housing. I hope the housing authority looks into it and kicks your sorry butts out. I'm sick of living on mac-n-cheese and driving a beater to help support the like of you. Come to think of it, I'll call the housing authority myself. "

" 1700 block of west Wabasha? That wouldn't be the Maplewood "Town Homes" now would it? Wonder where the residents got the money for two heavily modified $15,000 cars. I just hope the stereos weren't damaged so the owners can still drive around town playing Rap Music at 200 decibel's! "
