" I'm an Oregon medical cannabis patient and an infantry veteran who suffers from chronic pain. I can tell you with strictest certainty that the decisions made by voters and legislators in my own state have made a huge difference in my quality of life. Medical marijuana allows those, like myself, who suffer severe side-effects to commercially produced pharmaceuticals to relieve symptoms associated with not only pain, but a variety of diseases and conditions.
Several of these afflictions can be as difficult to treat as they are serious. Medical marijuana not only alleviates symptoms of horrible diseases like cancer and multiple sclerosis, but it has recently been shown to attack damaging cells. No other drug has so many beneficial effects, with so few potential risks, and yet it is federally regulated on par with heroin, cocaine, and crystal methamphetamine. Temporary euphoria as a side-effect does not equate to inherent evil. "

" Thank you for publishing your views on medical marijuana.
Let me tell you a little of myself and my personal experiences. First, I am a medical marijuana user in California. The powers that be hate to admit what a sensational success protected use of this medicinal plant has been and is. I am a disabled person and survive on my monthly SSI check. Most people would consider me poor. I live with constant pain that is alleviated by medicine that I no longer have to buy on the street. I do not cost the taxpayers money for prescriptions that tear down my health further, costing more money to the taxpayer attempting to reverse drug side effects. Do you see where this is heading?
Long story short, I had to pay my doctor cash for a medical recommendation because this wasn't a covered service. I am not complaining because I view the recommendation at my "get out of jail free card". Does anyone see how ridiculous the persecution of this quite valuable plant is? Do the God fearing folks read Genesis regarding God's gift of the plants? The use of the plants? I'm not going to go quoting verses but do they think God made some sort of mistake with marijuana? Conservatives (of which I viewed myself as being one) need to wake up. I'm sure some think my view is lame.
May I say that the western states have shown that medical marijuana has real value. Some places crime goes down. Revenue to the states is going up. California has already enjoyed many additional medical marijuana tax dollars and now our state board that collects sales tax says that they will accept tax dollars on the sale of marijuana. Smart thinking. Imagine how that income can be put to use! All of this cheats the drug dealer and puts him out of business. I say "bye-bye" and good riddance.
Some cities in California are shining examples of how medical marijuana can be implemented without having a negative impact on the neighborhood. Changing the way we think on this will all take time as we have been so influenced by "the war against drugs" and the general misidentification of "pot" as a dangerous narcotic or "class I (or schedule I) substance". Those classifications belong on heroin and morphine. Scientists now know better and are starting to publish their findings. Anyone who has smoked marijuana and has had a demerol injection (I've had both) knows the difference. Demerol is a narcotic pain reliever that is addictive with a whole list of side effects.
Please, let's get real. Future leaders, please promote real information. The truth both pro and con. Real stories of real people and some real testing on this God given plant. (You would be shocked to learn how much "real testing" such as double blind studies have NOT been allowed.) Let's not have not rhetoric or misguided politics. Show people in pain some compassion, would you? You might be in the hospital next door to my room one day wishing you had an alternative to some expensive constipating pain pills, shots or that drip in your IV. "

STOP THE LIES ABOUT CANNABIS MEDICINE
why are drug companies lined up with patents to use cannabis in med preparations they plan to market?
explain why drug companies are marketing inhalers with medicine dosages held within the container? with inhaled medicine, you get much faster action.
you cannot "standardize" anything as one size never fits all.
As an OMMP patient in Oregon, this HERBAL alternative works for my pain without causing nausea, stomach cramping and the "dullness of thought" .
the only alternative i could use causes liver failure, high blood pressure and increased heart attack risk. at 60 years old i dont need those risks.
cannabis is an effective, viable medicine in its natural form. you don’t die from the side effects. shame on those who refuse to help relieve suffering for those who need it.

" Like the Iraq War, the War on Drugs is a failure. The Nation has been at war with
drugs since the 70's. What is the current status of the War. We are loosing
the war.
Political Thinking is so "LAST CENTURY" ! We need responsible change.
Legislation in your state if approved would increase LEGAL ACCESS to medical grade
marijuana. But it would not increase abuse and increase crime. It is proven in
the states that have legalized Medical Cannabis that Use and Abuse have decreased.
And Crime has decreased.
If you Legalize and Tax, the criminal element is removed. Medical Doctors prescribe
medical dosages which are documented.
It is time to rethink the current
laws and get a Federal Managed Drug program that collects money instead of spending
money. "

" And the final insult? SMOKING A MEDICINE?
Vaporizers have long been available whereby the byproducts of combustion are avoided. There was a study cited within the last week regarding the effectiveness and safety of vaporizing cannabis. Additionally, a study in the last month or so found that cannabis is actually protective to the lungs against lung cancer and that cannabis smokers had lower rates of lung cancer than even non smokers.
But why would I have to try to educate an MD? Oh, it may be that that MD is in the pocket of those with a financial interest in perpetuating this anti-medical cannabis madness. "

" As for bypassing the FDA, big deal. They've had plenty of black eyes in the past couple years.
Cannabis is a much more an herb than it is a toxic, synthetic drug with dangerous side effects and lethal dosages. Maybe the FDA can focus on those pharmaceuticals instead.
Pot is pure....pure cannabis flowers and as for variable THC levels, there are additional compounds in cannabis such as CBD that are a part of the therapeutic component. The dosage titration is easy to accomplish and there is no lethal dosage or overdose. There has never been and will never be a lethal dose of cannabis. This is something that Aspirin and many other over the counter medicines cannot claim.
There have been numerous studies showing the clinical benefits and advantages to cannabis as a therapeutic agent.

" There have been several state-sponsored studies of smoked marijuana and all found that it is more effective for nausea than any anti-emetic available from the pharmacy. See: www.medmjscience.org.
In Oregon there are many different non-smoked methods of ingestion currently in use including cannabis butter which is usually made into candies, there are lotions, topical oils for massage, tinctures, elixers, and vaporizers. All of these are made by people in their own kitchens. I like the fact that I grow my own medicine and process it myself because I know exactly what went into it. My garden meets OMRI standards for organic gardening.
After 14 years of cancer treatment, I can say that I have seen a very clear benefit to using marijuana over conventional drugs that left me incapacitated and blacking out for days at a time. "

" It scares me that a person in your position is so uninformed regarding medical marijuana. THC can be dispensed in a variety of forms; pill, food and smoking it. I don't think terminally ill patients need to worry about the risks associated with smoking it. The purity of marijuana can be measured and regulated. Plus, nobody has EVER overdosed on THC. In fact, leading researchers on this issue say that government regulation of drugs will ensure its purity. Where did you go to medical school? "

But marijuana (and hemp) can provide unique opportunities for America. There are countless claims that marijuana has *greatly* improved the lives of AIDS patients.

" I am a conservative Republican and did not take any issue with the WDN comments. If most drugs are made from plants, why isn't research being done to make a pill from MJ that can be tested and finally approved by the FDA. A lot of nay-saying on the issue but think about those that could benefit from it's pain relieving affects. These people are not partiers, they are usually dying a slow and painful death. If you can lace baked goods with MJ, you should be able to make a pill that isn't smoked! "
