SMU clinches playoff berth after sweeping Carleton

.
Things could not have been better for the Saint Mary’s University softball team.

Entering Saturday’s home doubleheader with Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Carleton College, the Cardinals had won eight of their last 11, were in third place in the MIAC standings and were a sweep away from clinching a playoff spot.

Not only did they get the sweep and secure a place in the playoffs, beating the Knights 4-2 and 11-4, they got to do it during Senior Day, the last home game for five Cardinals, including pitcher Megan Wallisch.

“I just wanted to make sure it was a good game for my fellow seniors,” Wallisch said. “I wanted to make sure it was a day that everyone could look back on with fond memories.”

It was easy for Wallisch to focus more on her fellow seniors than the pressure of clinching a playoff spot.

“I wasn’t really feeling any pressure. I didn’t even realize these games would clinch our spot,” Wallisch said. “I didn’t find out until after the game when they announced it.”

At least one senior knew about the importance of Saturday’s game beforehand.

“It’s pretty big that we clinched a playoff spot,” Nikki Jung said. “We knew that we’ll probably have to play St. Thomas and Gustavus again, so it’s big today that we can just kind of breathe a sigh of relief and not have so much pressure on us when we play St. Olaf (on Monday).”

Jung provided a big spark for SMU in Game 1.

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Jung hit what proved to be the game-winning home run.

“My first two at bats I was pretty early on the ball, so I moved up in the box and she just threw me a first pitch that was right down the middle so it was a pretty easy pitch to hit.”

That extra cushion helped calm Wallisch, who had struggled in the second inning, allowing Carleton’s Michael Johnson to third and score on back-to-back wild pitches.

Johnson gave Wallisch problems in Game 2 as well. With the Cardinals up 6-0, she hit a grand slam to pull the Knights to within two.

“It’s just one of those things,” Wallisch said. “I just missed my spot, But our offense was on fire today, so I knew it wouldn’t be a big deal. Even with the two runs in the first game, I wasn’t worried because I knew my defense was behind me and our offense is always there to pick it up.”

Wallisch picked up the win in both games, going the distance in Game 1, striking out three and holding the Knights (8-28, 4-16) to no earned runs on five hits.

Game 2 saw Wallisch allow five hits again, while striking out six and walking one in five innings.

The Cardinals’ offense dominated the second game, led by senior Tara Close, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Hanna Schmitt, who was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

" won't make it past the first day of the conference tournament huh? guess they showed you by taking 2nd... you are all a bunch of idiots. the girls have more heart than you will ever know and if you knew any of them personally, including the coaches, you wouldn't have made such rediculous comments. "

Dale Harris the real one....... wrote on May 2, 2007 12:07 AM:

" This "Dale Harris" guy has not been man enough to say who he really is and I don't think he ever will be able to say it. So news to him there will not be a new coach and even if the season is over this weekend it is not because of his ridiculous comments. He needs to research whatever he is talking about and take his comments to where they can be heard. Not on some WDN comment board. "

" First, I don't play for her. Never have. Second, I am familiar with the MIAC, and she is the second best coach in the conference. Find me another one. Coach Gormley perhaps ties with Coach Miller. SMU is losing games not because lack of talent or lack of coaching. There are many talented players on that team, but there are holes in their lineup. Once Coach Miller fills those holes they will rival the best in the country. "

" the comment i made of the team lacking talent was of a sarcastic nature and meant to be toward dale harris, whoever that special person is. If you read my last statement, maybe with his help the team would be better. My comment was in no way intended to offend the SMU players of staff. maybe the team would be better with this great knowledge when we really know we want him no where near SMU activities or campus due to his attitute. Try reading outside the lines next time and realize when something is not intended for you, rather some idiot who started this whole rant. Thanks BYE "

" Now Dale, your concern for our program is deeply appreciated, however, your criticisms would be better spent elsewhere. Since it is obvious that you also have a great lack of evidence to back up your earlier statements. I am interested to know what provoked your previous comment. (DHYAAJA) Take care now. Bye bye then. "

To Whom This May Concern wrote on Apr 30, 2007 7:45 PM:

" First of all, to the alumna with lack of tack and blatant disregard for the SMU softball program, your comments are made with little support and obvious lack of knowledge of not only the SMU softball program today, but also those who play on the SMU team. It is apparent that you are an individual that is still deeply engrossed in the "SMU crew," which is a program that is designed for the students, not for those individuals who are, after graduation, meant to move on with their lives. We deeply appreciate each and every fan that comes to our games to positively support our program and highly encourage continued support. Take care now. Bye bye then. "

lack of talent??? wrote on Apr 30, 2007 6:19 PM:

" As a person close to the team I’m fine with people having their opinions, but please don’t talk if you know nothing of the situation. As far as the talent…SMU is 3rd in the conference in batting average, 4th in pitching, and 2nd in fielding. They also have an individual in the top 3 in the MIAC in rbis and the top 4 in home runs, and an individual in the top 2 in doubles. There are a lot of teams out there that would kill for that kind of talent. If you’re so embarrassed then please come with a bag over your head to watch their games from now on or better yet don’t come at all. All I can say is that they take pride in their program and that includes their coach. I look forward to watching them prove many of you wrong this weekend. "

Chad wrote on Apr 30, 2007 4:33 PM:

" I think you guys are being idiots. Although you think you are taking shots at Coach Miller, all you are doing is taking away from what the girls are trying to accomplish. By ripping Coach Miller, you are ripping the girls. They work their butts off. Leave the kids alone!! They don't need this distraction as they prepare for the MIAC tournament. To the SMU girls-ignore the negative comments. You're doing a great job this year! "

Good job dale tell it like it is. wrote on Apr 30, 2007 3:51 PM:

" Well you sure have the cardinal fans all upset at you but I support you. The playoffs will tell the story for the cards. Out the first day. The person that commented that she was the second best coach in the MIAC is just silly. You probably play for her!!!! "

KAO wrote on Apr 30, 2007 2:32 PM:

" MR. HARRIS-MAYBE ITS THE LACK OF TALENT MILLER HAS TO WORK WITH. I MYSELF HAVE WITNESSED A FEW GAMES AND WAS EMBARRASSED TO BE AN ALUMNA. HONESTLY. MAYBE YOU COULD DO A BETTER JOB WEARING RED AND A WIG. "

KAO wrote on Apr 30, 2007 2:25 PM:

" DAEL HARRIS WHY DIDNT YOU APPLY FOR THE HEAD COACHING POSITION THEN. IM SURE YOUR GREAT KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME WOULD BE QUITE APPARENT BY US ALL. "

A Fan wrote on Apr 30, 2007 2:16 PM:

" Mr. Harris clearly has no idea what he is talking about, and probably has never played or coached a day in his life. Coach Miller is by far one of the best coaches in the MIAC besides Coach Tschida of St. Thomas. She is not as vocal as Coach Fennern was, but that does not make her less of a coach. I am willingly to bet that her knowledge of the game far exceeds that of the ingnorant Mr. Harris. "

SMU Fastpitch Mom wrote on Apr 30, 2007 1:17 PM:

" I am one of the softball moms and I too find Mr. Harris' comments out of line. If he is the SMU fan and supporter that he says he is then he should be as supportive of any decisions by Fennern. Good coaches are hard to come by, but give her some credit. She has some great shoes to fill and I personally think our girls and Fennern felt she could do it. New coaches have to start somewhere and what better place to start then under the supervision of Fennern. Miller did a great job for us last year. First years are always tough on everyone but hey we worked hard, held that rope, and got to where we needed to be. Positive attitudes go much farther than negative ones. Mr. Harris support SMU in its entirety. "

" Mr. Harris, Coach Miller may be inexperienced as a head coach; however, her coaching ability should not at this stage be questioned. Coach Miller was hired to uphold the SMU Fastpitch tradition of hard work and excellence, a tradition that has once again been proven this year with an appearance at the MIAC tournament. As a member of the SMU community, thank you for your support of our new athletic director Nikki Fennern and her first official appointment of Jen Miller as head softball coach. "

out of line wrote on Apr 29, 2007 9:47 PM:

" As a SMU student I'm offended at your comments. Clearly you think very little of us if you choose to attack one of our coaches this way. For one, comparing coaches simply isn't fair. For two, you have never had Jen as a coach and know nothing of her abilities. The fastpitch team worked extrememly hard this year and deserves to be where they are. If this is the way you are going to choose to "support" us I ask that you please not support us at all anymore. "

dale harris wrote on Apr 29, 2007 1:22 PM:

" I am astounded they made the playoffs with the inexperienced and frankly poor new coach they have in Jen Miller. I believe she is a Cotter grad and an SMU grad as well. I am EXTREMELY surprised she found a head coaching position in college so soon. Sometimes good players, like she was, don't make the greatest coaches. Nikki Fennern was good, Jen Miller isn't. Anyway, hope the Cardinals do well, regardless of the coaching ineptitudes. I have been an SMU fan for quite some time and follow them in the paper. From the few games I’ve attended this year, I can see the obvious differences in coaching. "
