COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Giannini, Close power Cardinals past Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS — Jenny Giannini was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run and Tara Close went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Saint Mary’s University softball team to a 4-1 road win over Augsburg College on Tuesday.

Megan Wallisch struck out four and walked one while holding Augsburg (3-31, 2-16) to one run on six hits.
Nikki Jung and Danielle Geske both added RBIs for the Cardinals (16-10, 11-5).

Baseball

Bethel 10-15, SMU 3-14


ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Saint Mary’s combined for 24 hits and 17 runs, but couldn’t manage a win.

Brady Knudsen was 5-for-7 with an RBI and four runs and Nick Winecke was 3-for-8 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and four runs on the day for SMU.

The Cardinals took a 10-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but Bethel scored five in the fourth and six in the fifth to take the lead.

Brandon Haugh was 5-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and three RBIs in Game 2.

Women’s tennis

SMU 8, UW-River Falls 1


SMU finished its season in impressive fashion with an easy win over UW-River Falls.

The Cardinals swept the doubles three matches and won five of six matches at singles. Ann Leeder, Val Meschke, Aubrey Hirsch, Toni Troumbly and Brittney Nielsen all won singles matches.
