Ag leaders lobby in Washington

.
Members of the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership program went to the nation’s capital last month to speak with legislators about current issues and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2007 Farm Bill proposal.

The MARL program lasts 18 months and works to develop Minnesota agricultural leaders’ skills and knowledge of the various aspects of the agriculture industry in order to spread awareness of agricultural issues. It began in November 2000.
St. Charles farmer Mena Kaehler is part of the program’s fourth class.

“The whole point is to try to understand all the aspects of agriculture,” she said. “It’s important for all of us to understand it because we’re all agriculture advocates.”

Each class participates in a two-week international study tour and a one-week visit to Washington, D.C.

“It’s an opportunity for agriculture people to get into the legislature and to talk with the people who make the laws so that they understand the issues,” Kaehler said.

Members met with national farm policymakers, representatives of the World Bank, Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., and Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

They discussed the 2007 Farm Bill proposal, which includes a $250 million increase in direct payments for beginning farmers and ranchers, a $7.8 billion increase in conservation funding and $1.6 billion in new funding for renewable energy research.

Tim Alcorn, MARL’s executive director, said the program is designed to make participants more comfortable talking to lawmakers so they will be more likely to participate in the future.

" Stating the average family farm income to be $80,000. A farm income is also that business' operating budget and family existance. That $80,000 has to put crops in, harvest those crops, keep in repair all of the equipment (because you can't afford to buy new), upkeep of out building, the cattle's health issues and to many more to list. Hopefully after those issues are addressed there is something left to take care of the family. I suggest you become educated on the subject before making mindless comments. Try doing the job, even if only on paper. Take that $80,000 and find out what it takes in the course of a year to farm. I would like to hear what your thoughts are then! "

" you should take data with a grain of salt. a lot of people spout facts and "according to statistics" but data can literally come from anywhere. it depends on how the research is done and what kind of data they are looking for. if efficiency is so important then the meat industry should be scrapped. insane water subsidies, waste lakes, feeding corn to cattle in the end makes fattier beef, there are many reasons of why the meat industry is inefficient and supporting statistics. rationally however it makes sense too. why grow acres of feed for a few cattle when it could be directly fed to consumers? on the otherhand, monocropping has destroyed biodiversity, weakening the genetic constitution of plants leaving whole crops open to one disease or pest. im not a farmer but i think a wholistic balanced approach would really benefit everyone. "

" According to data, the average farm family makes 80,000 per year; if this isn't the case with you then I'm sorry, Averages are just that. "DEAR SSP" your comment is stupid, with your logic, one shouldn't be able to question any one, someone produces everything you know. "

" One can only imagine how a Severely Simple Person would dare to complain about farmers with their mouths full. "

" I would like to ask SSP where or on what basis can he/she make such a statement? Do you know anything about farming? There are farmers that do not get goverment funding. I know this because my husband is one of them. I have to work off of the farm to help survive. The price of selling milk has pretty much stayed the same for the past 25 years, while operating costs soar. Could you live off of wages earned 25 yrs ago with the expenses of today? That is not to say that there are not problems with the programs. I would like to see SSP work side by side with someone/anyone who farms! "

" Farm welfare; is there any group of people left that can actually be self sufficient? Did you know that the average farm family makes almost double the salary compared to a non-farm family? Someone in Washington has to tell these people to either be efficient or get out of the business "
