State Patrol Captain Randy Slinger confirmed Tuesday that Aaron Vannorman was driving south on U.S. Hwy 61 with his wife and 11-month-old daughter when he lost control of the 2003 Saturn Ion and the front passenger side struck the back of a Minnesota Department of Transportation snow plow.
Jennifer (Jack) Vannorman, 27, suffered severe head trauma with extensive injuries, including a broken vertebrae and liver and lung damage, according to her grandmother, Jeanette Sorenson.
Vannorman was taken by ambulance to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis., because a blizzard had grounded all medical helicopters in the area. She was listed in critical condition Wednesday, according to the hospital.
Aaron Vannorman and his daughter received minor injuries and were brought to Winona Health by ambulance. He was later transported to Gundersen Lutheran for surgery on his ear and emergency dental work. He was treated and released by Sunday.
The snow plow had been clearing out a median crossover on the icy four-lane highway and was occupying the left lane, Slinger said.
Plow driver Michael Albrecht, 25, had no apparent injuries.
The state patrol is still investigating the accident.
