Woman pleads guilty to stealing $200,000

.
A former Fastenal Co. employee from Arcadia, Wis., admitted in federal court Tuesday to stealing nearly $200,000 from the Winona-based hardware company.

Maliena Slaby, 32, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Madison to a single charge of possessing a counterfeit check written on Fastenal’s account for $962.35, according to the United States Attorney’s office in Madison.
Between July 2002 and April 2005, while employed as an accounting clerk at Fastenal, Slaby forged company checks worth about $197,000 payable to herself and cashed them for her own benefit, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Grant Johnson.

Johnson said a list of the checks filled 10 pages. Many of the checks were written for $900 to $1,000, he said.

“It was a lot of checks, I don’t have an exact count right now,” he said.

The theft was uncovered during a company review, Johnson said.

Slaby could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine as well as restitution. She is scheduled to be sentenced May 1.

" You end up in a district court in Madison when you take money across state lines and cash the checks in Wisconsin......taking them across state lines makes the penalties worse... "

" ....obviously this $197,000 theft had NO affect on the past 3 years of Fastenal's records for increased sales!!!! "

" It would be nice once in a while if someone writing in to these comments would show a little understanding and empathy for the person. Yes she commited a crime. Yes she should be held accountable. But to suggest jail time is just sad. No one was injured. No property was damaged. What happened to forgiveness? "

" This is less of a Behavior issue than another disorder classified SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which it truly is! Skip any plea bargains, throw the book at her for the max whatever that is, 10 years plus, seize all her assets, including home and the clothes on her back, seek restitution, (Like that will ever happen in most cases), hire new accountants and AUDITORS, and blame it on Global Warming as well as SAD. Then maybe I will consider investing in Fastenal Stock again. "

Auditing?????? wrote on Feb 21, 2007 10:51 PM:

" You think Fastenal has ANY state of the art auditing (or for that matter operating) systems? HAHAHAHAHAHA "

" you can't blame maliena all if she had a good life at home growing up she would have never done something like this. having parents that are alcoholics and not being there for you the sad part of that is this is what you do and now she has to pay this price but not ony her but her children also. "

" ...you wanna know what DRIVES the otherwise intelligent person to commit such crime....greed and envy of what others have knowing she couldn't afford what she wants on her own salary..... "

I stand by my statement about behavioral issues wrote on Feb 21, 2007 3:39 PM:

" Think about it, people. If you were in a position to steal from your employer, knowing that the chance of being caught eventually was about 100%, would YOU do it? If your answer is NO, congratulations, tour conscience is in working order and you are likely to be psychologically of sound mind. Yes, she knew what she was doing, but what is it that DRIVES an otherwise intelligent person to commit a crime KNOWING, in moments of rationality, that the scheme will ultimately be exposed? "

AMAZING.... wrote on Feb 21, 2007 1:51 PM:

" I find it amazing that people think someone has "behavioral issues" a person is caught doing this....Maybe you should have worked with her to see her "behavioral issues"....material girl at Fastenal's expense.. "

??? wrote on Feb 21, 2007 1:46 PM:

" Behavior issue, what....?? More like stupidity. She went to school for accounting, then worked her way up the corporate ladder at Fastenal, to HUB Manager in Accts Receivable. How can you not plead guilty when you create the very check you endorse....??? "

what i don't get wrote on Feb 21, 2007 12:20 PM:

" Is why it took until $200,000 was missing before anyone said anything. Proper auditing should have caught this at the first check. "

" 401-K Plan????? The people on Wall Street and Board members of publicly traded company's want people to invest in stocks through their 401-K Plan, makes me want to think different, put it where it is safe, makes me want to go back to a fruit jar and bury it. The company must have poor internal control procedures. "

" I think people steal for gambling addictions just as well as for drugs. It's like that lady who embezzled a ton of money from that trucking company and gave the poor guy a heart attack and he died. She must have had a good old time with that money. No jail time, just gets away with it. How sad. "

I'll never understand.... wrote on Feb 21, 2007 8:11 AM:

" How people that embezzle money never think they'll get caught. "

What makes people do this kind of thing? wrote on Feb 21, 2007 6:56 AM:

" The behavior issues and drug addictions that, separately or together, lead to this sort of crime need to be addressed my mental health and addiction specialists. This type of crime appears on the rise. "
