Exchange program sends employers to Mexico to connect with workers’ families

.
It’s all about cultural understanding.

That’s the main message behind Puentes/Bridges, a program that promotes cultural understanding between employers, employees and community members in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The program largely deals with the area’s growing Hispanic population and the dairy industry.
But today, a Buffalo County public health employee will travel to Mexico with more than a dozen others from the area. The trip, sponsored by Puentes/Bridges, is a 10-day training session that includes five days of intense Spanish language classes, and immersion in culture and language that includes a five-day stay with a Mexican family. The trip also includes visits to farms and historical sites, as well as lectures from experts on Mexican culture, history and immigration issues.

“I hope to come back with a better knowledge, or overview, of their culture,” said Jennifer Rombalski, health officer and public health supervisor for Buffalo County Health and Human Services.

This is the sixth consecutive year the program has sent people to Mexico, said Shaun Judge Duvall, director of the program, who is also an interpreter and former Alma, Wis., teacher.

The point is to have employers and employees learn about their Hispanic workers’ or coworkers’ culture and history, Duvall said. Although it’s largely for dairy producers, other employers and employees are welcome.

Rombalski is hoping to build better relationships with the Hispanic community. As a supervisor, she will come back and give training presentations to other employees, she said.

Mark Johnson of Johnson’s Rolling Acres dairy farm in Peterson, Minn., said he’s sending an employee to Mexico for the trip this week. About half of his employees are Hispanic.

Ultimately, what bridges the two cultures is a better understanding of where they come from. Duvall said when the employers get to meet their employees’ families, the meeting and understanding that comes from it creates a special bond.

“That says a lot about those employers,” she said.

" It would not kill you to stop lecturing the rest of us about our need to learn another language but english to live in this country. And for your information, Walmart does more to help poor Americans than any other company in the United States. We just need to kick all of the liberal voters off of welfare and we will have plenty on cheap labor. "

" The point is that too many people in this country and community want to pay the cheapest price for a product. When was the last time you supported local businesses (Walmart does not count)? Jobs are going to Mexico and China where labor is cheaper. If you are an employer, you have to keep up with the market or you will be left behind and bankrupt. P.S. It would not kill you to learn another language or learn about other cultures. You are a very small minority in this world--realize it and grow. "

" About your exchange program to Mexico. Seems like and Sounds more like those in the exchange program needs to take a tour and familiarize themselves with federal laws, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence, and learn the meaning of treason, sedition, insurrection, and sabotage. What is American Culture? wrote on Nov 25, 2006 12:46 PM:

" To those who think our culture needs to be protected, I ask you what culture is that? The United States has no specific culture. The US is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world. The big defining point of American Culture is that people have the freedom to live however they want. "

Only if we let it... wrote on Nov 24, 2006 4:36 PM:

" Spanish will only be the most popular language if we let it. Many of us do not intend to. Sorry if we don't just roll over for this non-sense. By the way, if you want to learn spanish, no one is stopping you. Just don't tell the rest of us we "have" to help the invaders from the south by learning spanish. The United States is the best country on this planet! That is why so many wish to come here. It is totally understandable. Most of us simply ask you obey our laws to do it. That means legal immigration, no amnesty for law breakers, the elimination of anchor babies for illegals and learning english. Most of us will then welcome you to our great land. "

Gary wrote on Nov 24, 2006 2:06 PM:

" We had better all start learning to speak Spanish because it won't be too long until that will be the most popular language. Either that or ghetto lingo. "

" Get off of your high horse and spare us your narrow minded liberal pap. I am sick and tired of being told what's right and wrong from a bunch of disingenuous clowns like yourself. The rest of us who love our country and want to protect our borders, language and culture will no longer be silenced by your guilt. Why don't you take a little more pride in your own coutry, its history and what it stands for in the world? Are your too lazy to defend your own country from invasion, or just to blinded by political correctness t see whats going on? Why don't you go down to the post office and stage a protest so the rest of us have something to laugh at this weekend? "

" I don't have to learn Spanish because I live in the United States Of America. If they want me to understand them, they can learn English. "

Frank wrote on Nov 24, 2006 11:16 AM:

" So are you all just too lazy to learn Spanish or too xenophobic to even consider it? This nation has no official language FYI. P.S. Writing in all-caps doesn’t get you more attention, it just makes you more obnoxious the you already were. "

This is BS! wrote on Nov 24, 2006 9:56 AM:

" This is the biggest pile of garbage I have ever read. The way to have better realations with hispanics is to HAVE THEM OBEY OUR LAWS AND STOP COMING HERE ILLEGALLY! And if they want to come here leagally, welcome, BUT WE SPEAK ENGLISH SO LEARN IT! This has nothing to do with intolerance or racisism and everything to do with expecting employers and anyone here that isn't supposed to be obeying the laws of the United States! "

" What the heck does a county worker have to take spanish lessons for? This is B.S. .......what a waste of taxpayer money!! I hope he can't get back across the border to the USA!! "
