Bernnes Ruth Gerson

Sept. 25, 1912 — July 2, 2006

Bernnes Ruth Gerson, 93, of Winona passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006, at her home.

Bernnes had a passion for cooking, baking and canning. When the fall leaves changed, you could find her in the kitchen canning jelly, jam, apples, pickles and most any of the vegetables she grew in her vast garden.

She took great pride in her cinnamon and peanut butter rolls, homemade bread and enough candy and cookies to keep all the neighborhood kids happy.

Mom had a heart of gold and never turned a traveler of the rails away. The less fortunate were always sent on their way with a bountiful bag that would keep them for several days.

Bernnes was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Winona to Paul and Minnie (Peterson) Krakow.

She lost her father at an early age and left school to tend to her younger brothers and sister. She later was employed at Winona Knitting Mills.

On April 29, 1935, she married Bernard S. Gerson. Together they enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, cards with friends and a weekly evening of dinner and dancing at the Oaks Supper Club.

She enjoyed and was very active at the Winona Elks Lodge as her husband ascended the chairs of office. She traveled with him to many in-state and out-of-state meetings and conventions. Aside from her housekeeping, Mom was a Cub Scout den mother, active in the Parent Teacher Association and later worked at Mayan’s Grocery Store.

She was never too busy to attend one of her son’s ball games.

She is survived by two sons, Scott and Garry (Judith), both of Winona; sister-in-laws, Muriel (Len) Nestrud and Myrna Deilke; and six grandchildren, Dana (Darren) Hillesheim, Andrew (Morwen) Gerson, Rebecca Palbiki, Kimberly Ruppert, Jennifer (Mitch) Cyert and Corey Gerson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, on April 1, 2001, still-born daughter, grandson Matthew Gerson, brothers Glen Krakow, Theodore (Tubby) Deilke, Lehland (Dutch) Deilke and Ray Deilke, and sister Viola Bronk.

She was a member of Central Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Central Lutheran Church, with services following, with the Rev. Scott Olson officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joel Peterson, Len Nestrud, Andrew Gerson, Bruce Fullen, Darren Hillesheim and Dave Schultz.

Memorials can be sent to Central Lutheran Church Building Fund.
