Winona Senior High School student Max Fletcher, Cotter High School student Jonathan Walz, Winona homeschool student Rachael Ryan and Lewiston-Altura High School student Johanna Rupprecht will compete for a share of about 8,200 awards, worth $33.9 million, to be offered next spring.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists and about half will be selected as winners.
To move to the finalist level, students must have outstanding academic records, endorsement from their school principals and SAT scores that confirm their performance on an earlier qualifying test.
Winona Senior High School students Emily Hyle and Seamus Kilmartin also were named commended students in the scholarship program. Though they will not continue in the competition, commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1 million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
