SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Winona Senior High School's Garrett Heath placed sixth Saturday at the Footlocker Cross County National Championships.
Heath was the highest-placing junior, crossing the finish in 15 minutes and 15 seconds, behind five seniors. There were 32 runners from across the country participating in the 5 kilometer race at Morley Field in Balboa Park.
The boys race was controlled by a pack of runners from the Midwest region, with the lead changing several times.
Chris Solinsky of Stevens Point, Wis. pulled ahead at the two-mile mark and won the race in 14:41. It was Solinsky's personal best and he tied the record for largest margin of victory at 10 seconds.
Just four seconds separated the fourth-place and 10th-place runners.
Four of the top six runners came out of the Midwest regional race, in which Heath took fourth. Runners from the South region took third and fifth places. The Midwest team won the meet with 27 points, followed by the South at 44, the West at 71 and the Northeast was fourth with 84 points.
David Van Orsdel of Hopkins, who ran against Heath in the MSHSL state meet, was 25th overall in 15:43.
